Building a Cohesive Dining Room: Table + Chairs + Lighting Guide
Putting together a dining room that actually looks cohesive โ not just "a table with some chairs around it" โ doesn't require an interior designer. It really comes down to three things: your table, your chairs, and your lighting. Get those right and everything else falls into place.
Start with the table
Your dining table is the anchor of the whole room, so it's the right place to start. The two biggest decisions are size and material.
Size: Measure your space first. You want at least 36" of clearance around all sides of the table so people can pull chairs in and out comfortably. A round table works beautifully in square rooms and keeps conversation flowing naturally. A rectangular table fits better in longer, narrower rooms โ our rectangular glass dining table or 63" farmhouse wood table are both solid picks depending on your style.
Material: Glass keeps things light and modern. Wood adds warmth and texture. Not sure which? Our glass vs. wood guide breaks it down nicely.
Pick chairs that complement, not compete
A common mistake is buying chairs that are too similar to the table โ or too different. The sweet spot is contrast with connection: something that differs in texture or color but shares a finish or vibe.
For example:
- Velvet chairs in Sage Green or Blue + a wood farmhouse table = warm and layered
- Velvet chairs in Black or Gray + a glass table = sleek and modern
- Cutout birch sapling chairs + a round glass table = light, sculptural, contemporary
- Cream velvet chairs + the spiral base glass table = glam and editorial
The gold legs on both our velvet and cutout chair collections make mixing easy โ gold is a natural connector between different table styles and finishes.
Or go for a complete dining set
If you'd rather skip the mix-and-match and get everything coordinated from the start, our rectangle dining table sets include a glass-top table and four velvet chairs in one package โ already matched, already balanced.
Don't forget lighting
This one gets skipped more than it should. A pendant light or chandelier centered over the dining table pulls the whole room together visually and sets the mood for meals.
A few rules of thumb:
- Hang your pendant 30โ36" above the tabletop
- Choose a fixture roughly half the width of your table (so a 72" table pairs well with a 36" fixture)
- Warm bulbs (2700โ3000K) make food look better and create a cozier atmosphere than cool white light
- Dimmer switches are worth the upgrade โ nothing sets the mood for a dinner party like adjustable lighting
Putting it all together
Once you have your table, chairs, and light fixture sorted, the rest โ a rug, a centerpiece, some candles โ is just details. The key is having a clear foundation to build from.
